Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the top-streamed track within 6 months. The song is a blend of reggaeton and pop music has not just brought interest to reggaeton, but also attracted attention to Latin music more generally. Billboard's Top 100 in 2015 had two songs mostly of Spanish and the year 2016 featured four. However, during the heights of Despacito's fame in 2017, there were 19 predominantly Spanish tracks that made the top 100. And in 2020 it was 41. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, famous artists started to work with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team on MIA (2018) and Madonna collaborated with Maluma on Medellin, 2019 In 2020, several Reggaeton musicians were complaining about the direction of the genre toward the mainstream. Yet, a young generation, such as Rauw Alejandro was determined to keep the trend going. The group incorporated elements from different genres and electronic music.
